Information on Lexington Kentucky's Protest of Goodwill

NATIONWIDE PROTEST AT GOODWILL THRIFT STORES EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK! DATE: August 25, 2012 TIME: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. WHERE: 130 West New Circle Road Lexington, KY 40505 Did you know that some Goodwill workers with disabilities are being paid as little as 22 cents per hour? This is an informational protest to promote public awareness of the unfair and discriminatory practice of paying workers with disabilities subminimum wages. Various Goodwill locations across the country will experience protesters advocating for an end to inequality and immoral wage earnings of individuals with disabilities employed by Goodwill. Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) discriminates against individuals with disabilities by making it legal for organizations to have a “special wage certificate” allowing them to pay employees with disabilities far below the standard minimum wage. This discrimination is based on low expectations and misconceptions about individuals with disabilities. Come support and join in a national effort to end discrimination and unequal treatment of individuals with disabilities. Posters and protest materials will be provided. For more information please contact: Pamela Roark-Glisson at (859)948-3663.Together we can make a difference and promote awareness for the right of all people to obtain competitive employment!
