Hello counselors and potential mentors,
The Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired
(VRCBVI) is seeking blind or visually impaired college students with
a 3.0 average
or its equivalent (and at least 60 credit hours) as Mentors for our
summer College Assessment Program (C.A.P.) to be held June 17th
through June 29th 2012.
Maturity and good blindness skills a real plus! During CAP, targeted
at blind and visually impaired high school students and blind adults
who are considering
attending college, staff will assess students' skills and readiness
for college by simulating a college schedule. Mentors will accompany
their group of
students (4 per group) to class, encourage good use of blindness
skills (cane travel, Braille, non-visual computer use), share
problem-solving skills from
their own academic and social experiences during college, participate
on a student panel during the College Logistics' class, and help
students at night
and on the weekend in the dorm. Telephone Interview required. If
accepted, mentors will be paid minimum wage ($7.25 per hour for a
total of 80 hours--
week-day, evenings, and some weekend hours) and room and board for
two weeks. Specific schedules determined upon hire. Final
notification of acceptance
during the week of May 14-18 by telephone/email with written
acceptance to follow. Please email a short essay no more than 500
words detailing why you
would like to be a mentor and how your skills and experience apply.
